Our neighbour’s think we’re nuts. Ever since Ikea came to this country we visit about once a year. As they watch us unload our sacks of purchases, inevitably the question arises. What boat part can you possibly find in Ikea?
The thing is that Ikea specializes in finding great solutions for small spaces. They also sell products that we just can’t find anywhere else. Take for example their roll of plastic drawer liners. Sturdy, and durable with a nonskid backing, these have made great liners for lockers. They prevent chafe and the inevitable annoying, knocking while on passage. They also keep our food products and belongings away from the layer of cockroach spray in low lying spaces. Robyn cuts them to size and can easily remove them for cleaning.

This wall hook caught our eye on one shopping trip.
Taking up minimal space, it has four hooks which allow us to tidy up a messy shelf. We hung it in the corner of the head and hang from it bathing suits, snorkeling gear, sun hats and a couple of other odds and ends. It has been a great buy.
Robyn has always complained that with limited counter space she can’t kneed dough or roll out pastry. On a visit to Ikea she found this roll of silicone that she can lie on the salon table. It’s a perfect non stick surface for working with pastry or bread dough and has the added advantage of sticking to the wood surface and making it non slip. After using, she simply washes it off and rolls it up to store neatly in a locker. (It makes great anti chafe between the pots when underway too!)
Yofy only has one sink. This makes washing dishes awkward and we are always looking for clever ways to stack dishes as they dry. We found this really compact dish rack in Ikea and when we got it home we found it actually sits over our sink.
While we are not getting any money from Ikea for promoting their ingenuinity (nor do we know anybody who works for Ikea), we think that this just proves that if you keep your eyes open, you can find good boat products outside of a marine store….. and often for less money.
